Review: Rachel Getting…

“I am Shiva the Destroyer, your harbinger of doom this evening.”

What’s it all about? Kym (Anne Hathaway) is released from rehab so that she can attend the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt). Chaos ensues.

“Rachel Getting Married” occupies the delicate space between ambitious and difficult to digest. It’s easy to become engaged with Kym’s struggle to reengage with her family after a tragic accident involving her drug abuse. But there are some moments that feel too personal. I was uncomfortable eavesdropping on the wedding at times; the extreme example being the rehearsal dinner. It was as if I walked in on someone at their height of vulnerability. Maybe I’m not used to the display of emotion, or the subject matter. There is a great amount of anxiety in the film — especially in regard to addiction, regret and loss — but the director, Jonathan Demme, and his leading lady handle it extremely well, and you leave the film appreciative of the film’s candid sentiment.

Favourite Scene: Elvis Stojko and figure skating references? Those are key ingredients for one damned good scene. Never have I witnessed Stojko starring so prominently in someone’s sexual fantasies. It was very, very amusing — and, ironically, quite topical. It is the Winter Olympics, after all.
