Review: American Beauty

“1970 Pontiac Firebird. The car I’ve always wanted and now I have it. I rule!” — Lester Burnham

What’s it all about? Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is a middle-aged, in a failed marriage and has a daughter who hates him. He experiences a midlife crisis after becoming infatuated with his teenage daughter’s best friend, resulting disastrously for every character within the film.

After watching “Beyond the Sea” (2004), I was jonesing to watch something else with Kevin Spacey. So, I picked the film that won him his second Oscar. (“The Usual Suspects” was checked-out at my video store.) The editing, directing and acting in this movie are so precise that I am not surprised that it won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The voiceover by Lester (Kevin Spacey) brings together the film’s smaller moments, proposing an understanding of beauty that we could only hope to achieve.

Favourite Scene: When Lester appears at the drive-in window, accosting his wife and her lover with their order of curly fries and a cheerful “Smile! You’re at Mr. Smiley’s!”. Whoah, you are so busted.
